The story of Osmar de Oliveira and Samba Tuque Brasil are the same for a big part of Osmar's life. As he says himself, he lives his life to the tunes of music. He is not only the founder but also the heart of the group; Osmar is the artistic director as well as the manager of Samba Tuque Brasil.
Osmar is one of those charismatic percussionists who put a spell on the audience once he starts performing. He will tease them, size them up and then let them go wild dancing and singing. Osmar's beats not only give the direction to the band, but also drives the entire audience. He confesses to being lucky as a musician, because he can do for a living what he loves and knows well. Osmar also points out that through SAMBA TUQUE he had opportunities, which would have never come along in other jobs. Since the age of 10, he was into percussion instruments, but only through Samba Tuque Brasil did his professional career take off. He learnt how to play an amazing array of instruments like repinique, agogô, atabaque, tambourine, caixa, congas, and bongo to name just a few. At the samba schools he co-founded, Osmar learnt quickly that improvisation is the magic key to the audience's hearts. Therefore you will never see a fixed line-up at Samba Tuque Brasil concerts. Osmar lets spontaneity and intuition reign supreme to get the party going; he is one of the musicians who need the direct contact with the audience to perform. As he says, "I need to feel the vibrations around me!"
The Percussion Boy
As the son of a traditional family in the historic colonial town of Paraty in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Osmar had a hard childhood. From early on, he had to work in his parents' restaurant. He dreamt of becoming either a musician or soccer player but he couldn't count on any support from his father as the latter feared losing him as his right hand for the family business. Year in and out Osmar worked as waiter and carried beer barrels. At the age of sixteen, he was made manager of Hotel / Restaurant Santa Rita. However, every free minute he could get, Osmar sneaked out to play soccer with his friends. "This was also very important for my development as a teenager, because I had to shoulder a lot of responsibility from a young age," justifies Osmar. Music entered his life when he was 10 years old. He was taught by a maestro but couldn't get used to the concept of regularpractice and schedules. Osmar wanted to play the songs he heard on the radio: he just played them by ear instead of studying the scale. The radio and stage were Osmar's training ground. He had no time to attend the practice sessions of the samba schools because Carnival always coincided with the high season of tourism, and his father couldn't do without him at the restaurant. As Paraty is a small town, there were no shops selling percussion instruments. Therefore Osmar had to improvise on pots, lids, spoons and even oil canisters while roaming the streets. With the aide of a book, he learned how to play the tambourine, but he had to play is softly not to awaken his newborn nephew sleeping in the same house. With his dynamism and passion he helped found two samba schools: „Vila de Paraty“ and „Unidos dos Bandeirantes“.
After coming to Germany, he stayed at the LATANKO (Latin America Kolleg) where he met two fellow Brazilian musicians with whom he founded at first the band "Brasil Pandeiro" and shortly after that "Samba Tuque Brasil". With his long experience in performing, Osmar soon became a widely recognised musician on European stages. He lives in Munich, Germany, from where he manages his interests. He is the father of 3 beautiful daughters, Júlia, Sarah und Elisa. But there will always be a big place in his heart for his homeland Brazil and family and friends there.“.
Paraty, a heritage town about 214 kms from Rio de Janeiro, is home to the Oliveira family. This picturesque town, famous for its beautiful beaches surrounded by tropical forests and its culture and creativity, was the main source of inspiration for Osmar's musical career. Osmar's family owns an island called „Ilha dos Cachorros“ (Dog Island) and a cosy hotel-cum-restaurant situated in the centre of town.Their island is 15 minutes away from Paraty harbour.Due to its huge variety of marine life, the island is a preferred location for fisherman as well as marine biologists. One of Osmar's favourite spots is the naturally carved pool, which invites you to jump into the sea.
